Bobby Sherman is My Uncle!
Before I begin my story, I'd like to introduce myself to you. My name is Debbie and I'm a typical 14-year-old teenager. I live in Maryland with my mom and dad, and I have two brothers - Michael (who is 12) and Bobby (the baby of our family, who is six) - and one sister named Mary-Ann (who is eight years old). My family and my life is probably very much like yours - except for one thing: my mother Darlene has a very famous brother. His name is Bobby Sherman and - he's my uncle! Having Bobby Sherman for an uncle is very exciting, but the most wonderful thing of all is that Uncle Bobby isn't special just to me and my family - millions of other people love him too! And Uncle Bobby loves you all very much! That's why I'd like to share my story and my memories of him with you - right here and now!
FLASHBACK - An entire year has passed, but the summer of 1969 is still so vivid in my mind - it seems as though it were only yesterday! I don't think I'll ever forget that special summer and my trip to California to visit my grandparents (who are also Bobby Sherman's mother and father). I hadn't seen Uncle Bobby since 1965 - and so much had happened during that time. Uncle Bobby now had a big hit record entitled Little Woman, and he was a regular on one of my favorite TV shows Here Come The Brides. I couldn't wait to see him - but I couldn't help wondering if he would recognize me. After all, four years had passed and I looked a lot different now that I was 13 years old than I did when I was nine!
SURPRISE! - I arrived in California one week early and instead of calling Uncle Bobby to tell him I was there, my grandmother decided to take me to the Columbia-Screen Gems ranch, where Uncle Bobby was filming Brides - and surprise him! When we arrived at the ranch, the cast and crew were on a break, but even though there were lots of people around, the first person I spotted was - you guessed it - my Uncle Bobby! He was his usual friendly self - going down a line of people, shaking their hands and signing autographs. My grandmother told me to join the line and surprise Uncle Bobby when he came to me. I was sure he wouldn't recognize me, but I knew I'd soon find out - cos a few minutes later it was my turn to meet Bobby Sherman! As he went to shake my hand - he stopped short, smiled and gave me a great big hug. It had been four long years, but instead of my surprising Uncle Bobby he surprised me - he recognized me instantly! I hugged him back real tight as happy tears rolled down my cheeks. It was so good to see him again!
MEETING THE BRIDES GANG - I was so proud of Uncle Bobby as we watched them film an episode of Here Come The Brides. He's so talented that even though I am his niece - I'm one of his biggest fans too! As the day went on, Uncle Bobby introduced me to the other members of the cast. They were all so nice I could understand why Uncle Bobby is so fond of each and every one of them! Bridget Hanley is really neat! She's a warm and wonderful girl and we got along so well that Bridget invited me to her dressing room for a long chat. She's one girl who is as nice as she is pretty. I didn't get to talk to David Soul for too long, but boy - is he cute! And Robert Brown is dreamy-looking too!
The day went by so quickly that before I knew it we had to go home to my grandparents' house. Uncle Bobby rushed off to an appointment, but before he left he made us promise to come back again later that week.
- Needless to say, I couldn't wait to go back to the Screen Gems ranch and spend more time with my Uncle Bobby. This time my grandmother and I arrived on the Brides set at about 11:30 a.m. We watched as they filmed the show and then at 12 o'clock noon the lunch bell rang. Uncle Bobby suggested that we get sandwiches from the lunch wagon and go to his dressing room, so that we could talk. His dressing room is a groovy trailer just a few feet from Stage 29, where they film the indoor scenes for the show - and it's great! The inside of the trailer looks just like a little apartment. It has a built-in table with benches - and that's where we ate our lunch!
We talked about many things. Uncle Bobby wanted to know how everyone was at my home - and I filled him in on all of our family news. After we ate, Uncle Bobby asked if I'd like to see "Seattle Street", the place where most of the outdoor scenes for Brides is filmed. I said "yes" - and Uncle Bobby took me on a personal tour! It was so exciting! I had seen all of these things on TV so many times and now - I was actually there!
It's funny, but when I'm watching Here Come The Brides at home in Maryland, and "Jeremy Bolt" is in danger or unhappy - I get confused and find myself rooting or crying for Uncle Bobby instead of for "Jeremy", the character he's portraying! I guess I think of "Jeremy" as my Uncle Bobby cos the two of them are very much alike. Of course, Uncle Bobby doesn't stutter - but both "Jeremy" and Uncle Bobby are sensitive, kind-hearted, lovable boys!|
My second visit to the Brides set was extra-special - cos Uncle Bobby took my grandparents and me to dinner! I even got to ride in his Rolls Royce! I was so excited I don't even remember what I ordered for dinner, but I do remember something much more important. I learned how very much Uncle Bobby loves his fans!
We were in a restaurant called Charley Brown's and two girls who were fans of Uncle Bobby's were sitting at another table. When the waiter came over to Uncle Bobby and asked if he'd sign autographs for the two girls - guess what he did? Instead of just signing the papers, Uncle Bobby got up and visited with the girls at their table! They were thrilled - and I was so happy for them!
During the rest of my vacation I got to see a lot more of Uncle Bobby, and I also saw many more thoughtful things he did for his fans. No wonder they love him so much!
WHAT HE'S REALLY LIKE -
I usually don't tell anyone that Bobby Sherman is my uncle, cos I don't want them to think that I'm bragging. The reason I am telling you is that I know how much you care about him and I felt you would want me to share these magical moments with you. When I'm home in Maryland, or when anyone finds out that my uncle is Bobby Sherman - they always ask me, "What is he really like?"
That's a tough question to answer. How do you describe someone who really and truly is too fantastic for words?
Bobby Sherman is very handsome; super-talented; has a sincere, warm personality; and gets along with everyone. That may sound "too good to be true", but the wonderful thing is - it is true! Even if my Uncle Bobby weren't famous - I'd be just as proud of him and love him just as much!
Someday, I hope you'll have the chance to meet and get to know my Uncle Bobby. I know he'd like that!
